A wooden playset is simply a structure built outdoors specifically for children to play on and around.  Wood is much more asthetic and visually appealing that alternative materials. Wooden playsets often include some sort of tower structure, slide, and a swing set.    A typical family owned wooden playset may also have components such as ladders, sand box, monkey bars, bridges, wall climbs, wooden or canvas roof, and other various toy accessories.

There are some standards that our country has put in place ensuring all residential wooden playsets follow to protect your children from accidents.  The ASTM has standard F1148 – 09 Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Home Playground Equipment. Cedar is a very weather resistant wood commonly used in children wooden playsets.  Yellow Pine is another one of the more popular types of lumber used. Slides, swing seats, and other accessories are often made with a rugged type plastic.  Other materials found in an outdoor playset are steel, canvas, aluminum, and rope.   Wooden playsets are not normally found in commercial playgrounds, they are usually constructed of a highly durable material such as steel.   Another feature commonly found with a wooden playset is some variation of a play pit, or soft landing area.
